Today is the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, one of the greatest accomplishment of the 21st Century for humanity.

Sadly, we witness governments ignoring these rules every day, perhaps reinforced by the lack of an international oversight and enforcement.

What do you think about it? How to change that situation?

Improvements have been made, I think.

In this regards, I would like to bring to your attention the “Montreux Document”(2008) born by an initiative from Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross to define a specific law about private military and security companies, and to promote guidelines to reinforce State supervision over them.

Of course, there is still work to be done to address new means and threats of warfare. Still, if the rules in existence were observed, most of the sufferings caused in the course of conflicts today could be avoided. Some efforts should be made to make those rules more respected.
