Clare is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in Labour Markets and Social Policy at Studio Europa, Maastricht University. Her current research aims to understand the links between uncertainty on the labour market and voter policy/party preferences, and how this in-turn leads to consequences for European welfare states and ultimately socio-economic outcomes.
Previously, Clare was a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Economics at Leiden University within the project “SOLID: solidarity under strain” where her thesis examined the ways in which immigration structurally challenges and changes the organisation and conceptual boundaries of national welfare states in Europe. Her paper ‘The political economy of immigration and welfare state effort: Evidence from Europe’ was awarded Leiden University’s 2020 Meijer’s Prize for best published article by a PhD candidate.
Prior to her PhD, Clare worked in International Development and Governance as an Impact Assessment & Knowledge Development Officer for Global Partners Governance. This role focused on evaluating parliamentary strengthening programmes in developing democracies such as Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt. Additionally, Clare has held positions in the British and European Parliaments.
Finally, Clare studied the double degree MSc Public Policy and Human Development, with a specialisation in Migration Studies at The United Nations University (UNU-MERIT) & Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (MGSoG) and the BSc Politics with Economics at the University of Bath.
